Use of charcoal production sites as archives for woodland history

pictureHistorical charcoal production sites store information on woodland history. The charcoals still present in the soil can be analysed microscopically to determine species and diameter of wood used. Since 2005, several charcoal production sites could be found in Schleswig-Holstein. First results produced Yasmin Ehlers in her semester research project 2006. Volker Arnold (Museum for archaeology and ecology Dithmarschen) investigated several sites in the woods of the Riesewohld, Dithmarschen.
