Today’s scarcity of woodland, ecological forestry and Ancient woods

pictureSchleswig Holstein has the lowest forest cover of the federal states of Germany. However, historical sources reveal that regionally extensive woodlands existed till the 18th century. We intend to fill gaps of the Late Holocene vegetation history on a local and regional scale. Reconstruction of former woodland composition has also practical implications for sustainable, ecological forest management. For questions of population biology and gene reserves of woodland species, it is important to trace potential woodland continuity of individual stands. Therefore, palynological and anthracological investigations are under way, as well as approaches of experimental archaeology.
